Food to Go in Rowland Heights

What food to go? No, just Food to Go. That's the name of the restaurant. Located next door to T S Emporium in Rowland Heights, this little shop is literally a hole in the wall. We noticed it one day looking for C's thermos options at T S Emporium and decided to try it sometime.

So after church one day, we headed over to grab some dim sum. Hubby's Chinese is almost nonexistent, but I made him order anyways because I was busy feeding R in the van. He's usually a little terrified of ordering in Chinese, but he was able to. You'll be better off telling the staff what you want, although there was one person who spoke limited English there when he went.

I had taken a peek inside the place the first time we went by, and they sell Chinese BBQ items also, like a Sam Woo's. But I was interested in the take out dim sum because I've been on the hunt for cheap places around my area to buy it.

For $11.40 ($2.80 each dish), we got 8 siu mai (pork dumplings), dan tart (egg custards), 4 har gow (shrimp dumplings), and 4 char siu baos (BBQ pork buns). I can't remember how many dan tart they gave us, but I think it was the three as shown in the photo. Yes we ate a few before I was able to take a photo. Shame on...uh the kids? Alright, I had some too.

The char siu bao filling was quite pasty and was not too great, but it wasn't that bad either. The har gow was good, and the siu mai also with its really chunky shrimps mixed in with the pork. The dan tarts were soggy but edible. Can't expect much for cheap dim sum, and I've had so much better in the Alhambra area, but I'm just happy I found something around here.

We came back on a different day and they were out of the siu mai and har gow at around one, so come early. On that day, we got chicken baos and sesame balls, and again those were just average.

Anyone know of a better cheap take out dim sum place in the Eastern SGV?

Food to Go is located at 1425 Nogales St., Rowland Heights, CA

I know this place! The only other place I know of that sells cheap dim sum is in El Monte but don't know exactly where. They had big giant bowls of porridge! I think it was 1 or 2 dollars per bowl. Lots of people bought stuff there and it was not only just Asian people buying stuff there.

Food To Go also gives discounts when you go in the afternoon. So many people waiting in line! They also have a steam counter with food items which tastes pretty good but isn't excellent.

I think I know where this is, but I do not go into that shopping plaza much....is this around the r and h cafe? maybe i'm wrong.

when my sister comes back, i'm going to take my family out for some dim sum....do you have any recommendations? i was thinking new capitol restaurant in life plaza...i've also had another dim sum place i believe it either on nogales or azuza...i want to say nogales though..where they have dim sum without the carts...i forget where it's called though.

btw, i've also tried those egg tarts for the first time last year at some dim sum places up north, as well as a bakery in chinatown sf, and loved em!

wsl98787, thanks for the info on the discounts. Good to know!

sharon, it wasn't so bad either, better than nothing, really!

mothermayi, i'm not sure what R and H Cafe is, is that the Garden Cafe? Food to Go is located on Nogales and Colima. I think you might be thinking of Happy Harbor Restaurant on Nogales and Gale next to the 99 Ranch. Althought I haven't eaten there, I heard its a good place to go for dim sum. My sister tried Capital Seafood for dim and said that although it was cheap, it wasn't that great. So I would recommend Happy Harbor. BTW, you're a city closer to the fires than I am, hope you keep safe. C's school is closed tomorrow so he's stuck home with me.

The place in El Monte was "Ocean Bo" but I went there recently to see about the dim sum items and the rate hiked up to be almost normal cost. It was 1.90 for a plate which is very high for leftover dim sum! It used to be like 1 dollar.

I also remember Food To Go also had something about some stuff being cheaper if you wait in one line while in another line you the price is higher (normal cost). It seems like the nearby restaurant and Food To Go are connected to each other.

wsl98787, hmm if I knew how to speak more Chinese, I could ask next time I go there, which probably won't be too far away. That's interesting, though.

Food for Tots, I also like it because the kids don't make a fuss about it and gulp it up. Makes for a fast lunch.
